Banking and payments when you first arrive in the UK
No UK account or credit history yet? Arrange your immediate payments, then check account requirements and documents. This guide explains the next steps without ranking banks or promising approval.

Cover your first week's payments
List upcoming accommodation, travel and phone costs and ask each organisation how you can pay. If using an overseas card, check UK use, currency conversion and cash withdrawal charges with the issuer. Do not assume it will work everywhere.
A current account handles everyday payments, often with a debit card. Contactless is a way to pay, not a separate account; check availability and limits with the issuer or merchant. Read account charges and any overdraft terms before applying.
Ask which documents the bank accepts
Check the chosen account's residence, identity, age and credit-check requirements. Having no UK credit history neither rules out every account nor guarantees acceptance for a particular one.
Gather identity documents, your current address and any accommodation or university paperwork. Without bills, ask whether the bank accepts a tenancy agreement or university letter and what it must show. A university letter is not universally accepted as proof of address.
Use the bank's official checklist. If online verification fails, ask about alternative checks. Do not alter documents or borrow someone else's address to meet the requirements.
Know who controls a regular payment
A Direct Debit lets an authorised company collect from your account, sometimes for a changing amount. A standing order instructs your bank to send a fixed amount on set dates. A recurring card payment lets a company charge your card regularly. They may have different cancellation controls.
Check dates, amount notifications and available funds, and review transactions. Stopping a payment does not cancel a phone, accommodation or other service contract. Check what you still owe with the provider.
Next: get a checklist for your circumstances
Start with MoneyHelper below, then ask the bank about eligibility, documents, charges and how to apply for the specific account. University student services may help with a supporting letter.
ETO365 does not arrange bank accounts or ask for banking passwords, PINs or verification codes. Submit sensitive information through the bank's own official channels.
