Choosing a PAYG SIM when you arrive in the UK
Get connected for your first days, then decide what you need longer term. Use your priorities to check prepaid and short-term options on providers' own websites.

Start with payment and commitment
Pay As You Go usually means paying in advance. Adding credit, buying a data pack and subscribing to an automatically renewing monthly plan are different arrangements. SIM-only pages may also list longer contracts: check the commitment and cancellation terms before choosing.
Arrange connectivity when you need maps, messages or a way to contact your accommodation. Have your phone model, accommodation address and a payment method ready. Check what the provider accepts; an overseas bank card may not work for every option.

Keeping costs down? Check the price after any introductory offer, expiry, renewal and out-of-bundle charges. Need lots of data? Also check fair-use, speed and tethering terms.
Coverage and travel?
Prefer a particular network? Check coverage around your accommodation and campus. Travelling to Europe or China? Check each destination's roaming charges and restrictions separately.
Keeping the number?
Want to keep the number? Read the inactivity and switching rules before leaving it unused for a long period.
Before you order
Does the plan include a UK phone number and SMS? What address and payment details are needed? Is it prepaid, a rolling monthly plan or a fixed-term contract?
